What is BOTOX?
BOTOX is the neurotoxic protein produced by the clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that can cause botulism. On the surface, that sounds terrifying, but it’s not! Back in the 1950s, scientists found that when a minuscule amount of the botulinum toxin was injected into a muscle it made the muscle temporarily stop contracting without any side effects or complications. Thus, BOTOX was born.
In the decades that followed, BOTOX was used in this manner to stop involuntary muscle spasms, such as eyelid spasms. More recently the FDA has approved BOTOX to treat overactive sweat glands and migraine headaches.
But it was in 2002 when BOTOX became a household brand name. That was the year the FDA approved the use of BOTOX to treat wrinkles on the upper third of the face.
What Is BOTOX Best Used For?
Botox is commonly used to treat crow’s feet, eliminate the wrinkles between your eyebrows and soften the wrinkles in your forehead. Other areas we may treat are the chin, platysmal bands in the neck, “bunny lines” on the nose, and upper lip giving people a "lip flip".
How Do I Choose Between BOTOX, Daxxify, or Xeomin?
Patient Testimonial
"Had a Botox treatment on November 27, 2023. I've had Botox there before and it's always easy and comfortable. Highly recommend Musick Dermatology and Spa."
How is BOTOX Administered?
BOTOX is injected with a very tiny needle, and most patients equate the feeling to that of a pinprick. A session takes just 15 minutes or so, making it a true “lunchtime procedure.” There is no "downtime" after Botox injections.
How Many BOTOX Injections Are Needed For Best Results?
The number of individual injections in a session will depend on what you are having treated. But one session is all you need. From there, your results will last from 3 to 4 months before your muscles start to contract again, again creating the wrinkles on the surface skin.
How Long Will Results of BOTOX Last?
Botox results typically last anywhere from three to six months, depending on various factors such as the individual's metabolism, the area treated, and the dosage administered. Over time, the effects gradually fade as the muscles regain their normal function. To maintain the desired appearance, individuals often opt for follow-up treatments at regular intervals. Consulting with a qualified healthcare professional can help determine the most suitable treatment plan and frequency for achieving consistent and satisfactory results.
Are There Any Side Effects with BOTOX?
BOTOX has been injected millions of times around the world and has millions of satisfied patients. Usually, the minor side effects are minor being slight pain, discomfort with injection, or bruising.
The main negative side effect with both BOTOX is an injection into an unintended muscle, creating a drooping eyelid, or cockeyed eyebrows. But thanks to the training and knowledge of the facial anatomy, our injectors at Musick Dermatology are highly skilled at placement.
