When CoolSculpting first came on the scene most people thought it was too good to be true. After all, how could a person get rid of fat in an area with nothing but cooling. No stitches. No recovery. No hassle.
But CoolSculpting is the real deal, removing up to one quarter of the fat cells in the targeted areas. Those fat cells are gone permanently. At Musick Dermatology we were the first certified CoolSculpting practice in Southern Illinois. Now, nearly a decade later, we’ve performed thousands of successful CoolSculpting treatments on our patients from Swansea and the surrounding areas.
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is the only procedure approved by the FDA that uses controlled cooling to eliminate fat that is resistant to changes in diet and exercise. The concept came from two Harvard scientists who observed that when children were eating popsicles, they developed dimples in the cheeks outside their mouth. They hypothesized that the fat cells in the cheeks were freezing and dying from the cold temperatures, making the cheeks leaner, leading to the dimple formation.
That idea became CoolSculpting. The procedure uses controlled cooling, called cryolipolysis, to target and kill fat cells. This is possible because fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than the non-fat tissue cells adjacent to them under the skin. In CoolSculpting, our aestheticians set the temperature of the dual cooling panels to precisely target the fat cells, without harming the non-fat cells. Once frozen, the fat cells die and are eliminated from the body over the next few weeks.
The procedure
During a CoolSculpting procedure, our aestheticians first discuss with you the areas you want to target. Next the cooling panels are positioned on those areas and the controlled cooling is applied. During the first few minutes of your session, you will experience a cooling sensation, and eventually, intense cold and pressure. This feeling soon fades, however, and you can read, work on a laptop, or even take a nap during the remainder of the session.
Afterwards
After your session you can immediately return to work or your normal activities. There is absolutely no recovery needed. Then, over the next few weeks your body will shed the dead fat cells. From 20 to 24% of the fat cells in the treatment area will die and go away.
